Cleaning tips: Where to focus your cleaning efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic

focus your cleaning efforts

As we find ourselves amid a global pandemic, we might be feeling overwhelmed and struggle to know where to focus our efforts. In this article we will share Skitterblink’s tips on where to focus your cleaning efforts during this trying time. Cleaning should not be at the top of your worry list which is why we want to make it easier for you by sharing our professional tips.

The 4 focus areas: Personal Hygiene, House Cleaning, Cleaning Clothes and Handling & Preparing Food.

Personal Hygiene

Personal hygiene has been a topic of discussion since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and remains extremely important today. In order to keep your home and family safe you should focus on the following personal hygiene practices.

–           Don’t touch your face

–           Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing

–           Keep your distance from other people

–           Wear a mask in public places

–           Wash your hands with water and soap for at least 20 seconds, regularly.

–           Monitor your health daily

House Cleaning

You can lower the risk of infection by cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces regularly. High-touch surfaces include but are not limited to doorknobs, tables, chairs, lights switches, refrigerator doors, taps, toilets, phones, tablets, computers, keyboards, controllers (remote and game), toys, etc.

Start by cleaning the surfaces with water and soap. After properly cleaning these high-touch surfaces you should also disinfect them. Use a disinfectant, preferably higher than  LOG4(99.99%) for effective results.

Follow the cleaning product instructions for effective and safe use. Read our article on proper cleaning and disinfecting (https://cleaningsouthafrica.co.za/how-to-keep-your-home-clean-and-safe-from-covid-19/) for more information.

Cleaning Clothes

The research on how long the coronavirus can remain on fabric is currently lacking therefore we advise preventative measures to help keep your home safe. Practices that will help lower the risk of infection are cleaning bed sheets, towels, and clothes regularly. If appropriate use the warm water setting on your washing machine when doing laundry. Be sure to clean and disinfect your laundry bag/ basket as well.

Handling & Preparing Food

There is currently no evidence of people getting COVID-19 from food or food packaging but it is important to stay vigilant and safe when handling and preparing food. Always wash your hands with soap and water before handling food. Use separate chopping boards for raw and cooked foods. Be sure to cook food to recommended temperatures. Before you sit down to enjoy your meal, you should wash your hands again with water and soap for 20 seconds.
