COVID-19 and The Festive Season

The COVID-19 pandemic has made 2020 a challenging year for many and therefore many people are excited but at the same time weary about what this festive season might bring. As the festive season is traditionally a time to spend with family and friends many of us are wondering if traveling and gathering is safe or even allowed. Which is why we took it upon ourselves to give you the information and guidelines set by the WHO with regards to travelling and gathering this holiday.

“Any decision to hold an event during the COVID-19 pandemic, no matter how large or small, should rely on a risk-based approach. Precautions to consider include actions to prevent transmission between people, and where to hold the venue and how it can be modified to make a safer environment. Cancelling a planned event is an option that should always be considered, especially in case of non-essential events or when precautions cannot be implemented or adequately communicated.” – WHO (Aug 2020). If you would like to consider the risks here are a few things the CDC recommend you consider: community levels of COVID-19 (what are the levels in your community), exposure during travel, gathering location, gathering duration, number and crowding of gathering, behavior of attendees prior to and during gathering.

When considering to attend a small gathering the WHO recommends the following precautions to protect yourself and others from COVID-19 infection.

  • Check local regulations regarding travel and gatherings
  • If you feel unwell, stay home.
  • Maintain a distance of at least 1 metre from others or wear a mask if you can’t guarantee distance.
